TÜİK Has Announced the Unemployment Rate for March 2018

Unemployment rate has declined to 10.1 percent. The amount of the unemployed decreased by 432,000 in March, compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 4.21 million people

Turkish Statistical Institution (TÜİK) has announced the employment and unemployment data for March 2018. According to these data, the number of the unemployed among those aged 15 and above reached 3.21 million people with 432,000 decrease in March 2018 compared the same month of last year. The rate of unemployment was 10.1 percent with a 1.6 point decrease.

Youth unemployment is 17.7 percent

The estimated non-agricultural unemployment in the same period was 11.9 percent with a 1.8 point decrease. While the rate of unemployment in the young population (aged 15 to 24) was 17.7 percent with a 3.7 point decrease, this rate was 10.3 percent with a 1.7 point decrease in the age group 15 to 64.  

The number of the employed grew by 1.01 million people, reaching 28,499 million while the rate of employment reached 47.1 percent with a 1-percent increase. Of all employments, 17.7 percent took place in agriculture, 19.7 percent in industry, 7.3 percent in construction, and 55.3 percent in service sector. Compared to the same period of the previous year, while the share of the agriculture industry among the employments decreased by 0.8 point, a growth took place by 0.3 percent in the industry, and 0.5 in the service sector. The share of the construction industry remained stable.

The rate of participation in the labor increased by 0.2 percent and reached 52.4 percent. According to the comparisons for the same periods, while the rate of participation of males in the labor was 71.8 percent with a 0.1 percent decrease, those of females was 33.4 percent with a 0.5 point increase.

The rate of unregistered employees is 32.4 percent; the employment has decreased and unemployment increased when the seasonal effects are omitted

The rate of employees that are not registered to any social security organization is 32.4 percent with a 0.7 percent decrease compared to the same period of the previous year. The rate of unregistered labor in the non-agricultural industry has declined to 21.9 percent with a 0.1 percent decrease compared to the same period of the previous year. 

Employment free from seasonal effects is estimated to reach 28,877 million people with a decrease of 59,000 people compared to the previous period. The rate of employment has declined by 0.1 percent to 47.8 percent.

The number of the unemployed free from seasonal effects has reached 3,174 million people with an increase of 22,000 people compared to the previous period. The rate of employment has increased by 0.1 percent to 9.9 percent.
