Rönesans İnşaat Opens World's Largest Railway Tunnel in Switzerland

Built by Rönesans İnşaat with a budget of 16 billion Euros, the 57-kilometer-long tunnel runs beneath the Alps, and will shorten the duration of travel from Zurich, Switzerland to Milan, Italy to 2 hours and 40 minutes with a one-hour reduction

One of the leading contracting groups in Turkey, Rönesans İnşaat opened the longest railway tunnel that it built in Switzerland.

Built by Rönesans İnşaat with a budget of 16 billion Euros, the Gotthard Base Tunnel is 57 kilometers long and 2,300 meters deep. Running beneath the Alps in Switzerland, the tunnel will shorten the distance between Northern and Southern Europe, and the travel from Zurich, Switzerland to Milan, Italy will last 2 hours and 40 minutes with a one-hour reduction.

The President of the Swiss Confederation, Johann Schneider-Ammann and several ministers attended the opening ceremony at Rynacht near the Canton of Uri, where the northern entrance of the tunnel is located. Angela Merkel, the Prime Minister of Germany, François Hollande, the President of France, and Matteo Renzi, the Prime Minister of Italy will accompany Schneider-Ammann in the ceremony organized at the southern exit of the tunnel in the Canton of Ticino.
