MAN Truck & Bus Begins Electric Bus Production in Ankara

German company MAN Truck & Bus plans to start the production of electric city and intercity buses at its manufacturing facility in Ankara before the end of 2025.-The first eCoach model is planned to enter production in 2026.

German company MAN Truck & Bus plans to start the production of electric city and intercity buses at its manufacturing facility in Ankara before the end of 2025.

It has been reported that a Product Development Center, covering an area of 300,000 square meters, has been established at the company's factory in Ankara, where the production of electric city and intercity buses is targeted to begin within the year. MAN aims to start the production of electric city and intercity buses from the Lion’s City E family in Ankara starting from mid-2025, while eCoach production is expected to begin in 2026. The first eCoach model is planned to enter production in 2026.

MAN follows clear zero-emission strategy across its entire vehicle portfolio and announced that 70% of its city bus deliveries now consist of electric models.

Barbaros Oktay, Head of the Bus at MAN Truck & Bus, stated: “The electric drive system is the most efficient solution. This technology has now matured. Its energy and CO2 balance is very good, and it also stands out with low energy costs. To shift toward climate-friendly mobility, we must significantly reduce CO2 emissions and bring our innovative eMobility technology to the roads. Our goal is to manufacture our products in a CO2-neutral way. We have already achieved this at our facility in South Africa, and we plan to accomplish it in Ankara by 2030 at the latest.”

Frederik Zohm, Executive Board Member for Research and Development at MAN, said: “In 2018/2019, we made the decision to establish the bus development center in Ankara and to transform it into an international research and development hub as part of MAN’s R&D transformation. Today, the new Product Development Center (PDC) in Ankara handles all bus development activities, documentation processes, prototyping, and project management. Work related to the eCoach model is now also being carried out here. This success has been made possible thanks to the high competence and dedicated efforts of our international bus team comprising colleagues from Munich, Turkiye, Poland, and South Africa.”

MAN has been working on future innovations at PDC in Ankara with approximately 830 employees since October. The PDC, which has received a total investment of €41 million over the past four years, is located on a 300,000-square-meter site. It includes a 1.4-kilometer test track, a test ramp, workshops, warehouses, an R&D office, laboratories, and a bus modification center where customer-specific requests are implemented.

As may be recalled, MAN submitted a bid in the most recent tender for the procurement of 20 electric buses and 11 charging stations, a project to be financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) through İlbank on behalf of Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality.  TEBA:2198/ 5 December 2024. However the tender was canceled because the project was not included in the Investment Program. Following this, İlbank resubmitted the project for the procurement of 20 electric buses with EIB financing for inclusion in the 2025 Investment Program. TEBA:2214/ March 24, 2025
