Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Pakdemirli's Statements

"Ilısu Dam will be commissioned in 2019.-We aim to generate 135 billion kwh of power per year with our hydroelectric power plants in the 100th anniversary of our Republic"

The Minister of Agrulculture and Forestry, Bekir Pakdemirli, shared the data about Ilısu and Yusufeli Dam and made a statement about the 2023 objectives.

Pakdemirli noted that Ilısu Dam would be commissioned in 2019, and the dam would be the world's largest of its kind in terms of the filling volume and the 4th largest HPP in Turkey.

Minister Pakdemirli stated that Yusufeli Dam and HPP, which are built on the world's fastest-flowing river, once completed, would be the highest dam in Turkey and the second highest dam in the world. The Minister reported that Yusufeli Dam and HPP would operate with an installed capacity of 540 MW and power generation capacity of 1.817 billion kWh.

As can be remembered, we reported that once the historical artifacts were relocated from Hasankeyf for construction of Ilısu Dam and HPP, the minimum level of water retention that was started in June 2018 would reach the maximum level by the end of the year TEBA:1872/ June 21, 2018

A power generation capacity of 96 billion kWh was achieved, and the 2023 objective is a power generation of 135 billion kWh:

Pakdemirli noted that dams and HPPs such as Deriner, Akköprü, Ermenek, Alpaslan, Borçka and Obruk, which were commissioned by State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), play a great role in generation of hydroelectric power in the last 16 years. Underlining that Deriner HPP started to generate power in 2013, and that the dam ranked 6th in Turkey in terms of power generation capacity and 3rd in the world in terms of height, Minister Pakdemirli stated that the dam has an installed capacity of 300 MW.

Stating that engaging the private sector in 2003 played an important role in the momentum gained by HPPs, which offer a clean and renewable way of power generation, Pakdemirli said: "A power generation capacity of 96 billion kWh was achieved with 626 HPPs that were in operation as of 2018. Thus, 53 percent of the technically and economically feasible hydroelectric potential of our country was commissioned. Our objective is to generate 135 billion kWh of power per year using our hydroelectric power plants by 2023, the 100th anniversary of our Republic".
