Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) disclosed the unemployment data for the month of January 2018. The number of unemployed people is recorded as 3 million 409 thousand in January 2018 decreasing by 576,000 people compared to the same period of the previous year. The unemployment rate on the other hand realized at a level of 10.8 percent decreasing by 2.2 percent.

Non-agricultural unemployment has been estimated as 12.7 percent for the same period decreasing by 2.5 percent. Youth unemployment rate encompassing the age group between 15 and 24 realized as 19.9 percent decreasing by 4.6 percent, whereas the figure realized as 11.1 percent in the age group between 15 and 64 decreasing by 2.2 percent.

The number of employed people realized as 28 million 29 thousand increasing by 1 million 357 thousand compared to the same period of the previous year, resulting with an employment rate of 46.4 percent increasing by 1.6 percent. The number of employed were distributed as 17.7 percent in the agricultural sector, 19.9 percent in the industrial sector, 7 percent in the construction sector, and 55.4 percent in the services sector. The share of the agricultural sector in the total employment figure decreased by 0.6 percent compared to the same period last year, whereas the share of the industrial sector increased by 0.1 percent and the share of the construction sector by 0.5 percent. No changes are observed in the share of the services sector in the total employment figure.

The employment participation rate realized as 52.1 percent increasing by 06 percent. Upon comparison for the same period, the male employment participation rate realized as 71.3 percent decreasing by 0.2 percent and the female employment participation rate realized as 33.2 percent increasing by 1.2 percent.
