22nd World Petroleum Congress

The 22nd World Petroleum Congress which is the most extensive oil convention in the world with broadest participation will be realized in Istanbul between the dates of July 9 and 13

The 22nd World Petroleum Congress which is the most extensive oil convention in the world with broadest participation will be realized in Istanbul between the dates of July 9 and 13. Fifty government representatives will participate in the congress including Energy and Natural Resources Minister Berat Albayrak, Russia’s Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak, US State Secretary Rex Tillerson, Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmad al Khalifa and India’s Oil and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

A number of topics will be taken up during the congress in relation with the future of Turkey in the energy sector besides energy efficiency and oil related environmental issues. Top level representatives of prominent energy companies such as BP, Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Total, Saudi Aramco and SOCAR will also participate in the event which is expected to host a participation of over 20,000 people.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Berat Albayrak

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Berat Albayrak who is one of the participants of the congress commented on the importance of energy supply issues in Turkey due to the instability in the region. Albayrak said, “Turkey’s energy policies will constitute an important source of reference in achieving political and economic stability in the region.”

The target of Turkey to become an energy exporting country will also be discussed during the congress which was formerly vocalized by Albayrak, besides the natural gas trading potential of Turkey as was referred to by Jozsef Laszlo Toth, President of the World Petroleum Council as another significant topic. Toth pointing out that Turkey is in a strategic position for such a trade made the following statement: “Turkey is an important transit hub for routes passing from the Middle East, the Mediterranean, Europe and all these regions. This will transform into a commercial activity if Turkey builds sufficient underground storage facilities and develops pipeline connections with Europe by taking risks in buying natural gas. There will be a session on this topic during the congress.”

As will be recalled, we reported that over 500 company executives and top level representatives besides delegates close to 7000 were foreseen to participate in the 22nd World Petroleum Congress which will be held in Istanbul in 2017 TEBA:1668/ June 23, 2014.
