23rd International Energy and Environment Fair and Conference (II)

ETD Chairman Ergüven: "We can predict the possible moves in the private sector and manage risks accordingly but public bodies may not act according to the free market."

ELDER President Çeçen: "In the next 3 or 4 years, as the investments in electricity supply progresses, we will have to complete our investments in infrastructure in order to provide the top quality service."

We continue to present you the important talks from the 23rd International Energy and Environment Fair and Conference (ICCI) that was organized in İstanbul Expo Center on May 3-5, 2017.

The problems of competition in the electricity industry were discussed in the Special Session of ETD titled Electricity Wholesale and Retail Panel. Birol Ergüven, the Chairman of Energy Traders Association (ETD), and CEO and Board Member of Limak Enerji A.Ş., Birol Ergüven: "The problem is not selection of supplier by free consumers. The problem is the death of the industry. If the industry dies, it will be very hard to revive it. You can consider the matter this way: if consumers do not choose their own supplier, what will an investor company rely on while investing? We are unable to predict the future.  Sudden decisions and actions of BOTAŞ or TETAŞ prevents companies from taking measures. We can predict the possible moves in the private sector and manage risks accordingly but public bodies may not act according to the free market. I admit that regulations are not made maliciously. I mean all regulations are indeed intended to enable to players to carry on but we can also see the negative results that they bring along in the long run. However, what we should take into consideration should be optimal benefit and total benefit. Some things may be done in good faith but have undesirable outcomes. There may be mistakes in implementation but the industry should make a contribution as much as the Ministry.

ELDER Chairman Çeçen

In his speech at the special session of MÜSİAD, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Association of Distribution System Operators (ELDER) Serhat Çeçen said: "In the next 3 or 4 years, as the investments in electricity supply progresses, we will have to complete our investments in infrastructure in order to provide the top quality service. The power distribution industry paid $13 billion to the State including the privatizations. We also need financial sustainability while making investments in our industry. We must have a sustainable market, and we are working in harmony with the authority for this purpose."
